Effects of Stream Straightening on Flood Runoff Characteristics
The effects of much stream straightening and diking on physical flow characteristics were determined on Boyer River in western Iowa. Problems are present in the several drainage districts concerning distribution of cost assessments for construction, repairs, and maintenance along the river. Precipitation and runoff data are tabulated for historic storms. The kinematic flood routing method was used with a computer to obtain discharge hydrographs at several places for two different volumes of river flow. Several flow variations and two flood routing time increments were used for stream conditions before and after the straightening and diking. Values of several physical flow used as indicators of the effects of stream straightening and diking. Flow characteristics used were: (1) peak discharge, (2) time to peak, (3) flood wave travel time, and (4) duration of flooding. Major conclusions are: (1) peak discharge after straightening was increased significantly, (2) flooding was eliminated by the improvements, and (3) flood wave travel time was reduced greatly by straightening the river channel.
