Alameda Creek Flood Control Project - Alameda County, California
The statement proposes administrative action for the entire project which encompasses the construction of flood protection works by the Corps of Engineers on Alameda Creek across the Coastal Plain from Niles Canyon to San Francisco Bay, and the construction and maintenance by the State of California of a multipurpose reservoir at Del Valle damsite on Arroyo Del Valle, a tributary of Alameda Creek, as part of the State Water Project. The project will greatly reduce damages to property resulting from inundation, bank erosion and sheet erosion; accelerate the conversion of agricultural lands to urban uses (residential, commercial, and industrial); accelerate the conversion of saltpond lands to public uses (recreation, wildlife sanctuaries, nature education, hiking, etc.); and have a positive impact on regional recreation. The completed channel will be less picturesque than the meandering creek; approximately seven acres of riparian growth was cleared north of Stanley Bridge; and in total, saltpond habitat will be reduced by 250 acres while increasing marshland habitat by 50 acres in wetland areas near Coyote Hills.
