The papers deal with the development of an appropriate overall sanitation plan for third world countries. It is based on an approach which considers the existing sanitation status as the starting point and aims at gradually improving the standard thereof within the ruling constraints. Guidelines for the acquisition of the relevant information, assessing the global needs, selecting suitable service types and implementing them, are proposed. In addition, the report contains the following information; a strategy for the development of low technology sanitation; chemical toilets; sanitation systems; the ventilated improved double pit latrine; the ventilated vault latrine; and the ventilated improved pit latrine.
