Abraham Lincoln purchased a house and lot at Eighth and Jackson Streets in Springfield, Illinois in May 1844. Except for a year in 1847 and 1848 he made this house his home until he left for Washington to be inaugurated as the 16th President of the United States. The site contained outbuildings--a carriage house, woodshed and privy, fences and a yard with trees and flowers.
