Correlations between current theoretical solutions for laterally loaded piles and full-scale field tests of laterally loaded vertical piles in a bridge embankment have been made. An extensive literature search was made, and two current approaches, the Reese and Matlock nondimensional solutions and the finite difference equations, were selected for comparison with actual field performance. Three full-scale lateral load tests were conducted on 6 steel pipe piles (10 3/4-inch O.D., filled with concrete) for Abutment No. 3 at the Occidental Drive Overcrossing in Sacramento, California. In addition, a special test was conducted on two 10-inch square prestressed piles. (Author)
