The general objective is to evaluate the strength properties of the shale and colluvium used in embankment construction and to relate these properties to embankment performance. Specifically, the research investigated six embankments along I-77 in Noble and Washington Counties that contained shales from the Conemaugh, Monongahela, and Washington Formulations. Several of these embankments have suffered at least one failure. The investigation consists of laboratory measurement of the material properties, field measurement of embankment performance, and analysis of the embankment stability and infiltration.
