The U.S.-China Pharmacology Symposium was the first bilateral scientific symposium between the United States and China to be held in the United States. It was part of the 1979 exchange agreement between the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China (CSCPRC) and the Scientific and Technical Association of the People's Republic of China (STAPRC). The symposium was held October 29-31, 1979 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Co-sponsoring the meeting were the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Ten Chinese pharmacologists representing the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Military Academy of Medical Sciences attended the three-day symposium and then traveled to pharmacological research centers around the United States for an additional three weeks.
