Studies of Sand-Sulfur-Asphalt Paving Materials
The use of sulfur combined with either sand or waste copper tailings was investigated as a substitute for good graded aggregate in asphalt paving materials as part of a sulfur utilization program. The development of paving mixtures with fine sands or tailings with sulfur and asphalt was accomplished in the laboratory and tested by laying small test paving sections. Materials used in combination with sulfur and asphalt were concrete sand, fine blow sand and waste copper tailings. The latter two are much finer than the concrete sand. Mix designs established for the three materials were, in weight percent, 80.5 concrete sand, 6 asphalt, and 13.5 sulfur; and 77 blow sand or copper tailings, 6 asphalt, and 17 sulfur. Small scale testing showed that these mixtures were suitable paving materials which were placed without compaction. Modifying the sulfur by reaction with dicyclopentadiene before mixing with the sands and asphalt was effective in modifying the sand-sulfur-asphalt mixture so that it could be placed and compacted with conventional paving equipment.
