Computational Optimisation of Test Specimen for Planar Shear Strengh Tests of Wood Based Panels
This publication describes a computational optimization procedure to improve the performance of a test specimen design for testing of planar shear strength of wood based panels. The optimization is based on the existing method and specimen design that is given in an appendix to the European standard EN789. As the first step, the EN789 specimen was analyzed, i.e., the stress distributions were calculated and performance assessed. Calculations were made using FEM with two-dimensional modelling. Based on the results of the analysis and the discovered weaknesses, the geometry of the specimen was step by step improved in the subsequent analyses to amend the weaknesses. As a result of the optimization procedure, a new specimen design is suggested. The method of testing with the new design is the same as with the existing EN789 method, but the specimen geometry has been modified. As with the existing method, the new method allows determination of shear modulus value in addition to shear strength.
