Stripping of Asphalt Concrete; Chemical Testing
Stripping of asphalt cement from the pavement aggregates has been recognized as a major cause of failures in asphaltic concrete pavements for many years. The cause of stripping is attributed to the presence of water or moisture in the asphalt-aggregate matrix. Stripping results in a loss of integrity of the asphaltic concrete and subsequent failures, requiring early and costly maintenance. In order to overcome stripping, a great number of antistripping additives, which are actually surfactants, have been developed and used, and in recent years their use has increased significantly. Many of these chemical antistripping additives, which are mostly proprietary chemical compounds, have good records in decreasing stripping damage. The purposes of the study are to determine the nature of the stripping phenomenon and to develop criteria for the selection and use of antistripping additives.
