Waves in a Harbor with Protruding Breakwaters
The oscillation of water surface inside a coastal harbor has been studied by many authors. It seems, however, that in nearly all previous works the coastline and the harbor mouth are assumed to be along the same straight line. Many existing small harbors, especially those constructed along sandy beach coasts, have breakwaters extending considerably far off the shore in order to achieve a large shielded area. It is, therefore, of interest to investigate the effects of protruding breakwaters. In the report a simple harbor of circular plan form is studied. The coastline is set back from the mouth and is alined with a diameter. This case allows a rather detailed analytical treatment and ready comparison with the known studies where the entire harbor is on the landward side of a straight coast.
