A new technique is developed to measure the shear modulus of soils. This technique, which involves the use of resonant footing tests, was employed both in the laboratory and in the field. The theory is based on the vibration of an elastic half-space commonly used analysis of foundation vibrations. By measuring the resonant frequency of a torsionally vibrating circular footing placed on an elastic half-space, the shear modulus of the half-space (soil medium) can be easily obtained. The details on this theory and the apparatus are described. (Author)
