Privately owned housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,804,000; this is 4 (+ or - 7) percent above the revised December rate of 1,738,000 and 18 (+ or - 7) percent above the revised January 1998 rate of 1,527,000. Single-family housing starts in January 1999 were at a rate of 1,394,000; this is 1 (+ or - 5) percent above the December figure of 1,378,000. The January rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 351,000. The January rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 59,000.
