Concrete and steel are the two major construction materials used in underground development work. This paper concentrates on three main aspects of underground construction with concrete. Firstly, it illustrates the types of structure which can be found in such an environment. Also included are general design principles for such structures. The second section describes how construction work of this kind is carried out. Finally, concrete mix design requirements are indicated. In the latter section, the use of cement replacement materials and admixtures is commented upon.
