Structural Behavior of a Reinforced Concrete Arch Culvert. Phase 3. Cedar Creek. Section VI: Settlement Ratio Analysis
An attempt was made to establish correlations between crown loads at one zone of a 22-ft (6.7 m) arch culvert under 191 ft (58 m) of overfill, as measured by soil stressmeters and as calculated by Marston's Settlement Ratio Analysis. Results were clouded to some extent by failure of the fluid settlement platforms at the bottom of the exterior prisms (footing level) due to groundwater infiltration. Correlations for a projection condition were very poor, but much better if a ditch condition were assumed. This result suggested anomalies in the methods of backfilling, which produced low compaction effort by hand methods in the vicinity of the crown but much higher compaction on the arch flanks by a vibratory compactor. Nebulous and relatively unpredictable assumptions required suggest that this method of analysis is not particularly useful.
