Fabric-Reinforced Dikes, Craney Island (June 1982-February 1983) (Video)
Three fabric-reinforced test sections 300-, 400-, and 750-ft long were successfully constructed on very soft dredged material deposits within the Craney Island dredged material disposal area, Norfolk, Virginia, by the US Army Engineer District, Norfolk, and the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. Subsequently, two dikes each about 4,000-ft long were constructed using this innovative construction technique to divide the 2,500-acre area into three separate areas for improved dredged material management. Prior attempts of conventional displacement construction techniques to construct these dikes failed. Successful completion of these fabric-reinforced dikes was a key element in the rapid implementation of the dredged material management program. Implementation of this program will provide a cost savings of about $270,000,000 over the next 36 years.
