Speed Zone Guidelines Using Roadway Characteristics and Area Development
The objective of this study was to quantify effects that selected characteristics and adjacent development patterns have on roadway speeds. Based on the results of a literature search and the availability of data for Kansas highway, twenty seven variables were identified as possibly affecting speeds on rural state highways and thirty two variables were identified as possibly affecting speeds on urban state highways. Speed data and data for the potential explanatory variables were collected for a total of 539 sections of state highway (186 rural and 353 urban sections).
