Project F 016-5, Lincoln County - Through Route and Canton By-Pass, South Dakota
The project consists of grading, structures and surfacing on U.S. Highway 18, beginning at Highway 11 approximately 2.0 miles west of the town of Canton, South Dakota and continuing easterly through Canton to the Iowa State Line, a total distance of nearly 6.3 miles. It will also include a by-pass around the north edge of Canton an added distance of approximately 5.0 plus or minus miles. The most obvious adverse environmental effect is the loss of agricultural land and wildlife habitat. A very small amount of channel clean out and shaping will be required at the structure site or sites depending on the feasibility of the water impoundment studies. A number of trees will be lost in this construction. Minor stream pollution will result from the construction of bridge berms and/or box culverts. Noise decibels as ascertained from Highway Research Bulletin 117 reveals that DBA levels will not exceed acceptable levels.
