Mammoth Cave National Park Business Plan, 2003
Mammoth Cave became a national park in 1941, and is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States. The park was designated to protect and preserve the extensive limestone caverns and associated karst topography, scenic riverways, original forests, and other biological resources within the 52,830 acre area. The park was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981 and as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. By identifying and documenting gaps between current funds and operational needs at Mammoth Cave National Park, the business plan quantifies the funds necessary to fulfill the goals and mission of the National Park Service.
