Excerpts from 'The Spitsbergen Mines'
This translation covers excerpts on the hydrogeology, underground water, extraction techniques, ventilation, gas, dust and underground fire suppression, coal extraction, and dust removal from 'The Spitsbergen Mines' (Shakhty na Spitsbergene), a book written by a group of Russian engineers who spent considerable time working in the Soviet coal mines on Spitsbergen and published in 1964. Most of the information concerns the Barentsburg and Piramid mines. Dust suppression, roof support, and provision of adequate water supplies appear to be the most signigicant problems encountered in these mines. The coal seams are overlain by sand stone that tend to cause roof control difficulties. In the late 1950's, a change in mining technique occurred from a form of advance long wall to retreat long wall mining.
