Fiber-Asphalt Impermeable Membrane for Concrete Bridge Decks. Final Report
The Department desires to evaluate fiber-asphalt impermeable membranes for bridge decks. Past experience had been using waste asbestos as the fiber until it was declared a hazardous material and required extensive monitoring for health reasons. The membrane material appeared to do the job and alternatives were researched. The use of polyester fibers in thin overlays was working satisfactorily and its use in the fiber-asphalt membrane was warranted. The mixing and placement of the experimental material was completed without problems and the contractor was impressed by the way that the material handled like a sand or 'dry mix'. The slightly higher than normal mixing temperature did produce a 'smoky' mix, but has not appeared to harm the asphalt properties of the mixture. Maintenance of the deck has been minimal with the majority of the problems around the finger joints that were not raised to the new elevation of the wearing surface.
