Nondestructive Condition Assessment of a Posted Bridge
The primary objective for the Tindall Bridge study was to demonstrate how it would be possible to design the restoration and preservation of a historic bridge by integrating advanced technologies with sound, heuristic-based structural engineering. The University of Cincinnati Infrastructure Institute (UCII) team of engineers used their experience in field instrumentation and diagnostic truck-load testing, structural system-identification, structural-steel design, and materials-engineering to conduct an evaluation of the Tindall Bridge in Sandusky County, Ohio (BA-209-0.05, constructed 1915). Since the critical material and structural attributes of the bridge were proven to be excellent, a strategy was designed for its preservation. First, critical retrofit was designed at the main roller supports; this was urgently needed to mitigate possible failure modes. Second, preventive maintenance and minor restoration, directed mainly at the floor-system and sub-structure, were designed to ascertain a safe operating service life of five to seven years. Finally, measures were designed to structurally reinforce the floor-system, which features an open grate deck, in order to ensure a subsequent fifteen to twenty year service life.
