Building Value into Housing Awards
Innovative designs construction techniques, and materials are proposed for constructing all of the 10 home plans selected for awards by HUD's 'Building Value into Housing Program'. The designs are geared toward making housing more affordable by incorporating many 'value engineering' ideas. Value engineering attempts to increase quality without increasing cost, or decrease cost without decreasing quality. The designs exemplify the wide range of engineering concepts, design techniques, and planning innovation that could reduce the cost and increase the availability of low - income and moderate - income housing in the United States. They include innovation in modular homes; poured adobe construction; concrete block; sleeping alcoves; integrated kitchen, bath, and utility module; flexible truss frame system; and flexible truss framing. Also presented are a pole - type tilt - up duplex, granny flats, and paired units for handicapped and able - bodied residents. A map, site plans, and illustrations are included.
