Environment-Enhanced Disintegration of Hard Rocks
The influence of surfactant solutions on the disintegration of hard rocks by wedge indenters and linear disc cutters was studied. Solutions of dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide in the concentration range .0001 to .001 mol/liter were found to lower the specific energy for rock disintegration by as much as 40% when determined with wedge indenters and by about 10% when determined with the linear disc cutters. An economic analysis based on these results revealed that, if these same surfactant solutions were used with a tunnel boring machine, benefit/cost ratios approximately 100 could be achieved.
