Optimization of Vibration Parameters for the Consolidation of Portland Cement Concrete
Laboratory investigations were conducted to determine optimum vibration parameters for maximum consolidation. Due to a lack of commercial vibrators capable of covering this wide range of parameters various pieces of vibration apparatus were constructed. These vibrations were used to shake specimens of six inch height and three inch or six inch diameter. No attempt was made to rod the specimens for consolidation. The excitation was rectilinear. There was noticeable edge effect. Some choices of frequency and amplitude had essentially zero effect on consolidation. Other choices made good cylinders which were then tested in compression. While no conclusive results were obtained it is clear that combinations of parameters other than those commercially available can produce good consolidation.
