Volume I discusses the experimental study to investigate the range in behavior of reinforced brick masonry subjected to shear for different clay units, mortar types and thicknesses representative of both older existing structures and new construction in the U.S. The 53 tests conducted on laboratory specimens and the three tests on field specimens from Whittier provide valuable data on the shear load displacement and normal load-displacement (dilatancy) responses of masonry bed joints during cyclic shear loading. Masonry bed joints show peak strength for the first cycle followed by residual shear strength. The data presented in the report permit the development of constitutive equations for masonry bed joint shear behavior in a form suitable for implementation in finite element models of masonry structures. Test results are presented in a separate second volume.
