Saguaro National Monument: An Archeological Overview
The report describes and evaluates the results of archeological investigations within Saguaro National Monument, Arizona, during the period 1937-1977. The monument consists of two separate saguaro cactus forests, divided into two parcels (East and West) by urban Tucson. The archeology of the monument is discussed against the background of research conducted in outlying adjacent areas in order to assess the significance of the resources. There is evidence of San Dieguito, Amargosa, Hohokam, and Papago occupation in the monument. Although the archeological resources of the monument are of secondary importance in relation to the saguaro cactus forest in park interpretation, preservation of the park's cultural resources is essential for further interpretation of Tucson Basin prehistory and ethnohistory. This is especially important in view of site destruction by land development outside of monument boundaries.
