Dispersion of Roof-Top Emissions from Isolated Buildings. A Wind Tunnel Study
A fluid modeling study of the dispersion of roof-top emissions from rectangular buildings was performed in the meteorological wind tunnel of the EPA Fluid Modeling Facility. The basic building shape was a 0.18 meter cube. Variations included a building twice as wide and buildings twice and three times as high. Each building was placed in a 1.8 meter, simulated, neutral atmospheric boundary layer. Low momentum, non-buoyant emissions were released through an opening at the roof center. Photographs of flow visualization experiments are presented for a qualitative evaluation of the building wakes. Concentration measurements at ground level and aloft are presented for each case at downwind distances within 20 building heights. Concentrations are presented in a non-dimensional form for ease in application to full scale situations.
