The value of nonfuel mineral production in Iowa in 1991 reached a record high of $344 million, a $27.6 million increase over that reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines by the State's mineral producers in 1990. Crushed stone, portland cement, construction sand and gravel, and crude gypsum accounted for about 96% of the State's total nonfuel mineral production value. Most of these commodities were utilized by the construction industry. Other mineral commodities produced, in order of decreasing value, included masonry cement, clays, lime, peat, dimension stone, and gemstones. Iowa ranked 29th nationally in the value of nonfuel mineral production.
