Scoping Calculations for Canadian Underground Research Laboratory (URL)
A series of scoping calculations intended to assist in the design of the Canadian Underground Research Laboratory (URL) were performed. These calculations were made using the ADINA and ADINAT finite element codes in geometries appropriate to examine the effects of mining and thermal loading on existing stress fields and displacements. The material properties utilized in the calculations were supplied by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited/Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment. Parametric studies were made for variations in interdrift spacing, thermal-power loadings, and vertical-to-horizontal stress ratios. The results of the calculations are presented in a form intended to be useful in evaluating various candidate excavation and test geometries. (ERA citation 08:017417)
