Fire Hazards Involving Children Playing with Cigarette Lighters
National fire incident data indicate that fires started by children playing are a significant contributor to the high per capita fire death rate for children less than five years old. Cigarette lighters and matches are the primary ignition sources. During 1980-1985 an average of 170 persons a year were estimated to have died in cigarette lighter fires, 120 of which died in fires started by children playing. Similarly, 170 deaths were caused by match-related fires initiated by children. The age of children involved, their gender, experience with lighters, and responsibility of parents were correlated with the hazards.
