Effects of Water - Borne Pollutants on Salmon - Passage at John Day Dam, Columbia River (1982-1986)
John Day Dam, completed in 1968 and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), is located at Columbia River Mile (RM) 216; the John Day Reservoir extends 76 miles upstream to McNary Dam (RM 292). The John Day River enters the Columbia River about 2 miles above John Day Dam. Like other hydroelectric projects on the Columbia River, John Day Dam has facilities for passage of migratory adult salmonids. These facilities include a fish collection system along the downstream face of the powerhouse and a fishway with auxiliary water-supply systems on both sides of the river.
