Verglimit De-Icing Chemical Asphalt Additive
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has used the chemical additive Verglimit in ID-2 wearing courses on three experimental overlay projects from 1985 to 1988. These Verglimit modified surface courses were intended to reduce early icing conditions and the accumulation of tracked snow. Construction and evaluation of these projects was performed under supervision of the New Products Evaluation Section of the Bureau of Bridge and Roadway Technology. On each of these projects, a standard or Heavy Duty (HD) ID-2 wearing mix was placed in addition to the Verglimit modified mix to compare the Verglimit section to a control section. However, the longest control section on the SR 80 site was only 240 feet in length; therefore, a realistic performance comparison between test and control sections cannot be performed on the project.
