Biochemical and Physiological Studies of Certain Ticks (Ixodoidea). The Ionic Composition of 'Hyalomma (Hyalomma) dromedarii Koch' and 'H. (H.) anatolicum excavatum Koch (Ixodidae)'
Hemolymph and gut fluid of nymphs and females of Hyalomma (Hyalomma) dromedarii Koch and H. (H.) anatolicum excavatum Koch (family Ixodidae) were analyzed for sodium, potassium, and chloride ion concentrations. The ionic composition varied slightly from stage to stage, but was the same in both species. The sum of ionic concentrations in the hemolymph was always approximately twice that of gut fluid. Hemolymph osmotic pressures of engorged and ovipositing females indicated that the ionic composition made the major contribution to the total hemolymph osmolarity. Both species tolerate large electrolyte changes in the hemolymph. (Author)
