Several theories have been published regarding the performance of nailed joints, covering both linear and non-linear slip in the joints and their strength. In earlier publications the author has examined and in part extended them, e.g. as regards the influence of the duration of loading. However, fundamental data for the practical application of the theories, particularly as regards the compliance and strength of the timber under nails, have been lacking. The purpose of the tests described was to determine such bed moduli and their dependence on such variables as type and diameter of the nails, density, moisture content and fibre direction of the timber, and the duration of loading. The results of the short-term tests show simple relations between the independent variables as regards the characteristic moduli of displacement and strength as well as more complicated interactions. The long-term tests clearly showed the difference between initial creep and creep at repeated loading. Among the practical results of the investigation it may be mentioned that time-dependent slip moduli are given for nailed joints and that their application at the calculation of the deformation and stresses in nailed beams is demonstrated.
