Experimental data on the energy consumption in houses in Switzerland are used to refute claims, based on laboratory and theoretical data, that houses with large glass areas consume more energy than houses with smaller window areas. The importance of overall design and construction features, building orientation, and building operation on home energy consumption is discussed. Energy accounting for a building considering the total energy consumed for producing, maintaining, operating, and demolishing a building is described. (ERA citation 05:004682)
