Flexible Pavement Overlay Design by Dynamic Deflections. Phase 1. Background and Equipment Selection
The report reviews and evaluates nondestructive testing equipment currently available and used for the dynamic evaluation of pavements and the design of flexible pavement overlays. The equipment described includes Dynaflect and Road Rater steady-state deflection devices and Dynatest and Phoenix falling weight deflectometers. Information presented includes basic equipment descriptions, operational characteristics, and current prices quoted by the manufacturer or distributor. The overall goal of the study described in the report was to provide a rational means by which a specific piece of equipment could be selected for use in the development of an overlay design method in South Carolina. Equipment evaluation criteria included availability, complexity of operation and data interpretation, cost, performance and maintenance levels, and the potential for successful implementation with an overlay design method.
