Development of Phreatic Surfaces in Earth Embankments
Transient or time dependent movements in water levels caused by rise and drawdown in the reservoir can influence the stability and integrity of dams or embankments that retain the reservoir. The time dependent fluctuations of water level cause transient seepage in the dam and such flow is accompanied by the existence of free or phreatic surface. Analysis and design of dams subjected to transient phreatic surface seepage is a nonlinear complex problem, and usually difficult to solve by conventional methods. Factors like nonhomogeneous media such as zoned embankments, anisotropy and irregular geometry make the problem intractable by the conventional methods. Consequently, it becomes necessary to resort to techniques based on numerical procedures; the finite element method is one of the powerful procedures available.
