A basic study of paving grade asphalt cements provided insights into factors affecting the behavior of these binders in thin films under shear and tensile stresses. The author states that the information obtained can be used for judgment concerning proper type and/or grade of bituminous material, and he indicates that thin films of binder are essential for high tensile strength, but no data have been provided on binder types other than asphalt cements and no optimum film thicknesses have been proposed.
