Along with the relocation and construction of SR 12 through the city of Walla Walla, this project is part of a comprehensive plan to provide adequate highway facilities for the increasing traffic volumes on state highways in the Walla Walla area. Near the beginning of the project, the proposed highway alignment encroaches upon the present grounds of Fort Walla Walla Park. Tire and engine noises and air pollution from exhaust emissions remain as objectionable trademarks of high-volume highways. Another unavoidable environmental effect is the displacement required by the project of homes and families. Approximately 12 families must relocate, plus several mobile home dwellings in a recently constructed mobile home court. Except for the mobile home court, no existing businesses will be affected by this project.
