Investigation of Subgrade Moisture Conditions in Connection with the Design of Flexible Pavement Structures
In the structural design of flexible pavements, the supporting power of subgrade soils should be evaluated on the basis of anticipated moisture conditions. It is, therefore, necessary to predict subgrade moisture conditions and to simulate these conditions in performing laboratory tests for subgrade evaluation. In this study, field investigations were conducted at selected sites in South Carolina for determining subgrade moisture variations under existing pavements. Findings from these investigations were utilized in the development of laboratory procedures for treating subgrade soil specimens in order to simulate anticipated moisture conditions.
