Pre-Dam Removal Studies of Goldsborough Creek, Shelton, Washington
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corp) recently proposed the removal of a severely deteriorating dam on Goldsborough Creek and restoration of the affected reach. Goldsborough Dam was constructed in 1921 at river kilometer (RKm) 3.5 to provide power to the City of Shelton. However, there is evidence of a dam at the existing location as early as the 1880's. The current restoration plan is to remove the dam and construct a new stream channel over an 850-meter section of the creek. The Corp granted funding to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct instream habitat surveys and to collect stream health monitoring data in lower Goldsborough Creek and to conduct salmonid spawner surveys in the watershed prior to removal. Survey data will be used to determine success of this restoration project by providing comparisons to post-dam removal monitoring data.
