Evansdale, Iowa, Local Protection Project
The Corps of Engineers has proposed to provide flood protection to the city of Evansdale by the construction of earthen levees. The protection project will utilize the embankment of a proposed freeway to serve as part of the total levee structure. In addition to the levee structure, eight ponding areas will be required within the protection to handle interior drainage. These ponding areas will encompass approximately 100 acres. Three borrow areas, totaling about 30 acres, will be required to furnish material for Levee Reaches one and three. Total length of the protective works will be approximately 4.6 miles. Maximum height will be 24 feet with an average height of 12 feet. Side slopes will vary from IV to 2.5H, to IV to 5H with an average base width of 100 feet. The proposed project will have a beneficial impact upon the cultural elements of the environment. Some negative impact can be expected upon the existing vegetation. Part of this negative impact can be mitigated by landscaping certain areas of the project. Some disruption of existing wildlife habitat can be expected.
