Movement and Cracking in Long Masonry Walls
Some signs of movement, however slight, were seen in more than half the buildings examined, though masonry repairs would have to be considered in less than 10% of the cases. Clearly, cracking or sliding is much less likely in walls designed within the BS5628 limits. Walls of intermediate length (two to three times these limiting unbroken lengths) appear to be more vulnerable. Very long walls appear to be less affected; this applies to both brick and blockwork. Taken as a whole, the results indicate that for unbroken wall lengths exceeding the BS 5628 limits, 'moderate' cracking is no more likely than 'no' or 'slight' cracking. Therefore length is not the sole cause of cracking due to movement. The evidence suggests, however, that there are certain configurations where cracking from in-plane movement may be expected.
