Cultural Landscape Report for the Vanderbilt Mansion Formal Gardens: Vanderbilt Mansion National ite, Hyde Park, New York: Site History, Existing Conditions, Analysis and Evaluation, Treatment
This report addresses the walled formal gardens, a component of the larger landscape of the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. The historic site is situated along the bank of the Hudson River in a long north-south parcel a quarter mile wide and over a mile long. The Mansion sits 170 feet above the river on the edge of a terrace characterized by open lawns, mature diciduous trees, formal gardens, serpentine drives, and neo-classically styled buildings. A site-wide treatment plan addressing the historic site as a whole was completed in 2009. This report builds on the 2009 treatment plan to provide more detailed and focused doccumentation and treatment for the complex landscape of the formal gardens.
