Laminations for Glued Laminated Timber. Establishment of Strength Classes for Visual Strength Grades and Machine Settings for Glulam Laminations of Nordic Origin. A Nordic Wood Project
The report describes the results from testing of Nordic spruce (Picea abies) in tension and bending. The objective was to establish particular strength classes for visual grades for glulam laminations of Nordic origin and to establish machine settings directly to the tensile strength and stiffness properties. The main tests were carried out on 1600 pieces of 40x145 mm timber from eight sawmills in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Additional test were carried out on 200 pieces of 40x95 and 40x195 mm timber from four sawmills to establish depth effects. All timber pieces were run through all strength grading machines and were visually graded according to the Nordic visual grading rules INSTA142. 1400 timber pieces were tested in tension and 400 in bending (only 40x1456).
