National Program for Inspection of Non-Federal Dams. South Norwalk Reservoir Dam (CT 00212), Norwalk River Basin, Wilton, Connecticut. Phase I Inspection Report
The South Norwalk Reservoir Dam consists of an earth structure with a stone masonry core that is 810 feet long with a rockfill toe on the base of the downstream side. There is an emergency spillway on the west side of the dam. The dam is classified as intermediate in size and has a high hazard potential based on downstream habitation. Based on visual inspection, records available at the site and past operational performance, the facility is judged to be in fair condition. A review of the engineering data available reveals that there are areas of concern which must be corrected in order to assure the safety of the facility. Seepage discharges in the vicinity of the toe of the main dam and the downstream earth slopes should be further investigated to determine their origin and monitored to determine any change. The spillway channel is in poor condition with many signs of cracking and spalling. The drainage area contributing to the dam is 2.39 square miles. The project will pass the test flood (Probable Maximum Flood) without overtopping the dam.
