Predicted and Measured Behaviour of an Embankment on Boston Clay
In early 1974, the authors and several other groups or individuals were invited to make predictions of the deformation and stability of a highway embankment on a deep clay deposit near Boston. Following upon the submission of the predictions, a full scale field trial was carried out in which fill was added to the embankment, the deformations and pore pressures measured, and then further fill was added until failure of the embankment occurred. At a Symposium held subsequently at MIT, the various predictors presented their predictions, after which the results of the field trial were revealed. This paper describes the methods by which the authors arrived at their predictions and compares these with the measured behaviour of the embankment. Brief mention is also made of the other predictions.
