Historic Structure Report Derby/Prince/Ropes House Historical Data, Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Massachusetts
Because of its distinctive architecture, the Derby house is considered to be of national significance. It is Georgian in style, intricately carved balusters on the front stairs and wood trim exhibiting the camber effect. Built in 1761-62, it is the oldest brick house in Salem and was the early home of Salem's most prominent merchant--Elias Hasket Derby. The National Park Service completed rehabilitation of the main house in 1938 and restored the kitchen in 1965. There are no plans to change the use of the house. Because of the reduced visitation and strict regulations at the house, there is currently little threat of overuse. Some structural weaknesses have been found in the house. Unfortunately, previous studies of the house have been incomplete. The yard around the house will be landscaped to reflect its appearance during different historical periods.
