Upgrading Existing Floors to Achieve Compartment Floor Standard
The objective of the research project was to develop methods of upgrading traditional timber floors in existing buildings to current compartment floor standards. The project was aimed specifically at flat conversions and therefore at buildings where the majority of the type of work is undertaken. Thus, large Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian houses with solid brick walls and timber joisted floors were of particular interest. The requirements, in the revised Approved Document part E, resistance to the passage of sound, and part B, fire safety, which come into operation on 1 June 1992, were taken into account and a variety of floor constructions assessed accordingly. The implications on the existing structure of converting buildings and consequently upgrading floors to compartment floor standard were investigated and discussed. (Copyright (c) TRADA 1993.)
